Once described as the most famous place on Earth that no one has ever been to, Cape Trafalgar near Cadiz in Southern Spain finds itself centre stage in 2005. On October 21st this year, two hundred years will have passed since one of the greatest naval battles in history took place in the seas around the Cape - The Battle of Trafalgar.
Fought between the British Royal Navy under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson and the Franco-Spanish fleet headed by French Admiral Villeneuve, the Battle of Trafalgar was a pivotal moment in the long-running Napoleonic Wars in Europe. Napoleon was planning an invasion of Britain but to achieve victory he knew that he had to gain supremacy on the high seas. Although greatly outnumbered, Nelson pulled off a dramatic victory over Napoleon’s fleet at Trafalgar, employing innovative maritime warfare tactics to surprise the enemy. This shattered Napoleon’s dreams of a British invasion, forcing him to switch focus to a ‘continental strategy’ and ultimately bringing him to defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
Nelson though was to lose his life in the fray. He died aboard his beloved Victory battleship shortly after Villeneuve’s fleet was defeated. To this day, Nelson is still recognised as one of Britain’s greatest war heroes, his most famous memorial being Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square, London.

So you want to go on vacation - but how do you decide where? This is often one of the biggest problems, and can lead to family infighting. Everybody wants to go someplace else - but you need a way to choose.
First, you should decide whether you want to do a “repeat” or not. This will just sort of depend on your personalities - some people like to go to the same place. They enjoyed it, they thought it was fun, and they’d like it to be a “second home” of sorts. Others are interested in finding something new - the point of a vacation for them is to get away from their routines, not start up a new one. Make a family decision and stick with it - everyone should be able to find at least a few places they can enjoy that are either old or new.
Second, determine how much money you’ve got to spend. This will be your limiting factor - you want to go within your budget, and even if someone really wants to go somewhere else, they’re going to have to make do with what you’ve got. Third, let everyone list three places that are their top choices. Talk them over once they are out there - don’t let someone get fixed on one place as the only place they want to go, because they’ll be disappointed if it’s not chosen. Try to find one where everyone can have something fun to do - figure out the interests of everyone in the family, and what they’d like to do on a vacation. Then see which of the places on your family list have the various recreational activities. If you can come to a consensus, then great - everyone will be at least somewhat happy. If not, think about agreeing to go one place this year and another the next.

When you are doing volunteer work in a third world country, you never know what you are going to see next, but what we did not expect was a woman in labor showing up in the back of a taxi.
The poor Mexican woman was accompanied by her husband and her doctor. The doctor had been taking care of her in her home and determined that she needed to be in the hospital to make sure everything went well with the delivery. So, here they came.
This poor couple not only showed up in an unusual way, but they looked like they had only been to town a few times before. They were obviously very poor. The Mexican people take pride in their clothing and would wear their best for a trip to town. But, these people had well worn clothing that were clean but threadbare.
During the one hour that they were in the hospital we found out more about them. This was to be the woman’s twenty fifth child. She had several sets of twins in the lot. Of those twenty five, sixteen were still alive. No wonder they looked so poor!
When the baby was born, the father pulled out the baby blanket. We felt pretty bad when we saw the four worn cloths that had been sewn together to make a ‘quilt’. Although the baby was obviously loved by her parents, we were distraught at the poverty.
They left as they had come. The family in the back and the doctor in the front with the driver.
My wife was impressed with their visit to the extent that she held a fund drive and raised enough money to get a real nursery. Before, the babies had stayed with the mother who was supposed to care for the baby as she recovered.
Not only did they get a new nursery, but each baby got a new flannel blanket to take home. The parents were thrilled. They were not used to such luxury!
We told the people
